Logical Metonymy: Discovering Classes of Meanings
نویسندگان
چکیده
We address the problem of interpretation of logical metonymy using a statistical method. Previous approaches to logical metonymy produce interpretations in the form of verb senses, whereas our definition of the interpretation is a cluster of verb senses. Such a class-based computational model of logical metonymy is novel and more informative than the previous ones. It also complies with the linguistic theories, which we empirically validate. We propose feature sets not previously used for verb clustering. In addition to this we conduct an experiment to prove that our representation is intuitive to human subjects. The system clusters the senses with the F-measure of 0.64 as compared to the gold standard, given that the human agreement on the task is 0.76.

A Probabilistic Account of Logical Metonymy
In this paper we investigate logical metonymy, i.e., constructions where the argument of a word in syntax appears to be different from that argument in logical form (e.g., enjoy the book means enjoy reading the book, and easy problem means a problem that is easy to solve). The systematic variation in the interpretation of such constructions suggests a rich and complex theory of composition on t...
متن کاملModeling covert event retrieval in logical metonymy: probabilistic and distributional accounts
Logical metonymies (The student finished the beer) represent a challenge to compositionality since they involve semantic content not overtly realized in the sentence (covert events → drinking the beer). We present a contrastive study of two classes of computational models for logical metonymy in German, namely a probabilistic and a distributional, similarity-based model. These are built using t...
متن کاملDeriving Metonymic Coercions from WordNet
This paper presents a method for deriving metonymic coercions from the knowledge available in WordNet. Two different classes of metonymies are inferred by using (1) lexico-semantic connections between concepts or (2) morphological cues and logical formulae defining lexical concepts. In both cases the derivation of metonymic paths is based on approximations of sortal constraints retrieved from W...
متن کاملOn the Distinction between Metonymy and Vertical Polysemy in Encyclopaedic Semantics
In cognitive linguistics, metonymy is seen as a fundamental cognitive process where one conceptual entity affords access to another closely associated one. Cases of vertical polysemy have also often been treated as instances of metonymy (see e.g. Radden and Kövecses, 1999). In vertical polysemy a lexical form designates two or more senses that are in a relationship of categorial inclusion – e.g...
متن کاملIntra-sentential context effects on the interpretation of logical metonymy
Verbs such as enjoy in the student enjoyed the book exhibit logical metonymy: enjoy is interpreted as enjoy reading. Theoretical work (Pustejovsky, 1991, 1995) predicts that this interpretation can be influenced by intra-sentential context, e.g., by the subject of enjoy. In this article, we test this prediction using a completion experiment and find that the interpretation of a metonymic verb i...
